Proverbs 9:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

But hee knoweth not that the dead are there, and that her guests are in the depths of hell. Proverbs 9:18 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical advice and insights on relationships, work, and morality, presenting timeless principles for daily living.

Chapter 9 sets up a vivid contrast between the way of wisdom and the way of folly, personified as two women. Wisdom is portrayed as a gracious hostess, while Folly—also called “the strange woman” or “the seductress”—entices the unwary with false promises.

In verse 18 the language of “the depths of hell,” “the house of the dead,” and the Hebrew term Sheol is employed symbolically. These images represent the ultimate consequence of following the path of folly. The woman of folly invites her guests into a realm that signifies spiritual death and destruction.

The verse highlights the ignorance of those who follow folly. They do not realise the consequences of their actions or understand the spiritual danger they are in. The description that “her guests are in the depths of hell” indicates that those who accept folly are already in a state of spiritual death, the abode of the dead.

The surrounding verses contrast this bleak picture with the blessings of wisdom, which offers understanding, knowledge, and life. The chapter encourages readers to choose wisdom, for it leads to righteousness, prudence, and the fear of the Lord, and it protects one from the destructive path of folly.

Application for believers is clear: recognize the importance of discernment and make wise choices. The passage warns against the allurements of sin and urges believers to seek God’s wisdom and understanding in daily life, aligning decisions with God’s principles and avoiding routes that lead to destruction and spiritual death.

In summary, Proverbs 9:18 serves as a cautionary reminder about the consequences of following the path of folly. It emphasizes the necessity of choosing wisdom and exercising discernment, warning that the allure of sin can lead to spiritual death. Studying Proverbs provides valuable insight into living a life marked by godly wisdom and discernment.
