Proverbs 12:4
“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”
Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains various practical teachings and insights for living a godly and successful life. Proverbs 12:4 focuses on the qualities of a virtuous woman and the impact she has on her husband.
Virtuous Woman:The term “virtuous” refers to a woman of noble character, integrity, and moral excellence. She embodies qualities such as wisdom, righteousness, kindness, and strength. This woman seeks to honour God in her actions and relationships, including her role as a wife.
A Crown to Her Husband:The verse highlights that a virtuous woman is a source of honour, blessing, and pride to her husband. Just as a crown adorns and enhances the appearance of a king, a virtuous wife brings honour and respect to her husband’s name. She supports, encourages, and uplifts him, contributing to his well-being and success.
Making Ashamed:Conversely, a woman who brings shame, dishonour, or embarrassment to her husband is described as “rottenness in his bones.” This metaphorical expression signifies that her actions and behaviour erode his strength, vitality, and emotional well-being. It suggests that a wife’s negative influence can have a deep and lasting impact on her husband’s life.
Application:This verse provides guidance for both husbands and wives. For husbands, it emphasises the importance of cherishing and honouring their virtuous wives. They are encouraged to appreciate and recognise the value of a wife who exhibits godly qualities and virtues. For wives, it serves as a reminder to cultivate a virtuous character, striving to be a source of blessing and honour to their husbands. It encourages them to be mindful of their words, actions, and attitudes, seeking to build up rather than tear down their spouses.
- Biblical Perspective:The verse aligns with other biblical teachings that emphasise the significance of a healthy and godly marriage. Ephesians 5:22-33, for example, instructs husbands to love their wives sacrificially, as Christ loved the church, and wives to submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ. This mutual love, respect, and honour contribute to the overall strength and success of the marriage relationship.
In conclusion, Proverbs 12:4 highlights the impact of a virtuous wife on her husband’s life. It underscores the importance of a wife’s character and behaviour in either uplifting or negatively affecting her husband. The verse encourages husbands to value and appreciate their virtuous wives and challenges wives to cultivate godly virtues that honour and bless their husbands.
