Proverbs 12:5

The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

Proverbs 12:5 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally linked to King Solomon. It gives practical teaching on wisdom, morality, and the results of our choices. This verse draws a clear contrast between the inner life of the righteous and the plans of the wicked. The focus is on the moral quality of a person’s inner deliberations and the counsel they give or receive.

Righteousness means moral uprightness and obedience to God’s commands. The righteous person’s thoughts are “right,” meaning fair, honest, and aligned with God’s character and standards. Their thinking reflects integrity and wisdom, and it leads to right actions. The righteous deliberately align their thoughts with God’s truth. In contrast, the wicked person’s counsels, or plans and advice, are deceitful. Their inner reasoning is corrupted, and their guidance is treacherous and untrustworthy. The wicked may offer advice that seems attractive, but it leads to harm or moral compromise.

This verse teaches that a person’s moral character shows in their thought life and in the advice they give. Right thinking is the foundation for right living. The thoughts of the righteous are not merely intellectual; they are moral and practical, shaping decisions and actions. The deceitful counsels of the wicked, however, lead to ruin and oppose God’s ways. This echoes the broader wisdom teaching that the heart’s condition determines the course of life. The contrast is stark: the righteous produce just thoughts, while the wicked produce deceitful counsel.

Believers are encouraged to be mindful of their thought life and the advice they receive. Cultivate thoughts that align with God’s truth, walking in integrity and seeking wisdom. Be cautious about trusting the counsel of the wicked, and discern between genuine wisdom and deceitful intentions. Examine your own thoughts and the counsel you offer to others. This proverb calls you to pursue righteousness in every area of life, including the inner life of the mind.

  • The righteous produce just thoughts, while the wicked produce deceitful counsel.

  • Right thinking leads to right actions; deceitful plans lead to ruin.

  • Pursue righteousness in every area of life, including the inner life of the mind.

Consider the quality of your own thoughts and the advice you give. Are they marked by honesty and fairness, or by self-interest and deception? Ask God to purify your heart so that your thoughts and counsels reflect His truth and love.
