Proverbs 13:17

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

Context

This proverb comes from the book of Proverbs, a collection of wise sayings that guide daily life. In ancient Israel, messengers carried important news between people and rulers. Their honesty determined whether the message brought peace or harm. The verse contrasts two kinds of messengers and the results of their work.

Meaning

The first line describes a wicked messenger who falls into mischief. The word “mischief” means trouble, harm, or evil. A messenger who is dishonest, deceitful, or careless in delivering a message will eventually face negative consequences. Their own bad character brings ruin upon themselves.

The second line presents the opposite: a faithful ambassador is health. An ambassador represents someone else with accuracy and loyalty. The word “health” means well-being, wholeness, and prosperity. A faithful messenger not only avoids harm but becomes a source of healing and good for those who receive the message.

The verse teaches that the character of a messenger directly affects both their own fate and the effect of their message. Unfaithfulness in communication leads to disaster, while faithfulness brings life and benefit to the community. This principle applies broadly to anyone who represents another or conveys important information, and it shows the value of integrity in all forms of communication.

Biblical connections

This principle appears throughout Scripture. In the New Testament, believers are called ambassadors for Christ, representing Him to the world (2 Corinthians 5:20). Just as a faithful earthly ambassador brings health, a faithful Christian who shares the gospel accurately brings spiritual well-being to others. Application

We all serve as messengers in various roles: at work, in our families, and in the church. When we carry information, we must do so with honesty and integrity.
