Proverbs 14:1

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

Proverbs 14:1 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, written mostly by King Solomon. It gives practical advice for living a godly and successful life. This verse focuses on the power of a wise or foolish woman to shape her household.

Building a house here means more than constructing a building. It means establishing and maintaining a home founded on godly principles. A wise woman understands her role in nurturing and shaping her family. She actively creates a loving, peaceful, and harmonious environment. Her wisdom shows in discernment, understanding, patience, kindness, and humility. She puts her relationship with God first and applies His wisdom daily. Her work is deliberate and ongoing, not a one-time effort.

The foolish woman tears down her own house. The phrase “with her hands” shows personal responsibility. Her destruction is not accidental; it comes from her own words, choices, and attitudes. She may quarrel, speak harshly, neglect duties, or fail to put her family’s needs first. Such actions undermine the stability and well-being of her household. The verse calls each reader to examine their own contributions to their home.

This verse teaches a universal truth: wisdom builds up, while folly tears down. This principle appears throughout Proverbs. For example, Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Proverbs 16:16 values wisdom more than gold. These passages reinforce that wise living brings life and stability.

  • Women’s role: This verse addresses women and their influence on their homes. It encourages cultivating godly wisdom and character that promote family well-being. Wise women seek to create an atmosphere of love, support, and spiritual growth.

  • Impact of choices: Our actions have consequences. Choices affect our families and those around us. We must be mindful of our behavior and its effects on our homes.

  • Further study: Read other passages in Proverbs about wisdom, such as Proverbs 1:7, 8:11, and 16:16. Study biblical examples of wise women like Sarah (Genesis 18:6-15), Ruth (Ruth 1:16-18), and the Proverbs 31 woman (Proverbs 31:10-31). Reflect on passages about building strong families, such as Ephesians 5:22-33 and Colossians 3:18-21.

Every person, not only women, builds or tears down a household. The wise woman’s work is deliberate and ongoing. The foolish woman’s destruction is equally deliberate. This verse calls us to examine our own contributions to our homes and to choose wisdom in daily life. Building a godly home requires patience, love, and reliance on God’s wisdom.
