Proverbs 14:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.”

Proverbs 14:23 (KJV) says: In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its practical wisdom, often presented in the form of short, memorable sayings. It provides guidance on various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and moral conduct. Proverbs 14:23 addresses the themes of diligence, productivity, and the consequences of empty talk.

Labor and Profit:The verse begins with the assertion that “in all labor there is profit.” This statement emphasizes the value and importance of hard work and diligent effort. It suggests that when people engage in productive work, they can expect positive outcomes and benefits. The rewards may include financial gain, personal growth, skill development, or the fulfillment of goals.

Empty Talk and Penury:The second part of the verse contrasts the positive outcomes of labor with the negative consequences of “the talk of the lips.” This phrase refers to empty or idle talk, meaningless conversations, or excessive speech without action. The verse warns that such talk only leads to “penury,” which means poverty, lack, or a state of deprivation. In other words, excessive talking without corresponding action or productive work can result in negative consequences and an impoverished existence.

Practical Application:Proverbs 14:23 offers valuable wisdom for our daily lives. It encourages us to prioritize hard work, diligence, and productive labor in order to reap the benefits and profit associated with it. Instead of engaging in empty talk or idle chatter, the verse prompts us to focus on taking action, making progress, and working towards our goals. It reminds us that mere words without corresponding effort or action are ultimately unproductive and may lead to negative outcomes.

  • Spiritual Application:While Proverbs primarily focuses on practical wisdom for daily living, we can also draw spiritual insights from this verse. As believers, we are called to work diligently and faithfully in the tasks and responsibilities God has entrusted to us. This can include our vocations, relationships, service to others, and spiritual growth. We are reminded to avoid empty religious talk or hypocrisy and instead demonstrate our faith through sincere actions that align with God’s principles and teachings.

In summary, Proverbs 14:23 highlights the importance of hard work and productive labor, emphasizing the benefits and profit that arise from such diligence. It serves as a caution against empty talk or excessive speech without corresponding action, warning of the negative consequences that may result. By applying the wisdom of this verse in our lives, we can strive for productivity, growth, and a fruitful existence, both in practical and spiritual realms.
