The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

Context

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings that guide people in living a righteous and skillful life. It gives practical instruction on relationships, work, speech, and character. This verse teaches the value of receiving correction with a humble heart.

Meaning

“The ear that heareth” means more than just hearing sounds. It describes active, attentive listening with an open and teachable spirit. A person who truly hears is ready to accept instruction and change.

“The reproof of life” is correction that leads to life. Reproof may come as advice from a mentor, a rebuke from a friend, or conviction from the Holy Spirit. Such correction is given in a warm and earnest way, aiming at the spiritual and eternal well-being of the one corrected. It corrects not only by words but also by example.

“Abideth among the wise” shows the result. The one who accepts reproof dwells with wise people, is counted among them, and enjoys their company and counsel. Wisdom is not something we are born with; it grows through humble acceptance of correction.

Biblical connections

The next verse, Proverbs 15:32, warns that whoever refuses instruction despises his own soul, but whoever heeds reproof gets understanding. This contrast shows the life-giving nature of correction. Proverbs 12:1 similarly teaches that those who love correction love knowledge, while Proverbs 13:18 warns that ignoring reproof leads to poverty. Hebrews 12:5-6 reminds believers that the Lord disciplines those He loves, and Revelation 3:19 calls us to be zealous and repent.

We should respond to criticism with humility rather than defensiveness, and we should also give correction in a life-giving way, with love and concern for others.
