Proverbs 16:19
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Proverbs 16:19 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is a book of wisdom, mostly written by King Solomon, offering practical guidance for daily life and relationships. This verse belongs to a section that contrasts humility with pride, showing which attitude God values.
Meaning
The verse sets up a clear comparison. It says it is better to have a humble spirit and be with the lowly than to share the spoil with the proud. The word “spoil” means plunder or loot taken in victory, often gained through pride and worldly success. The lowly are those who are humble or afflicted, and being with them is presented as more valuable than sharing in such gain.
Humility means recognizing one’s limitations, holding a modest view of oneself, and treating others with respect and honour. Scripture consistently promotes humility as a desirable trait before God and in human relationships. The life of Jesus is the clearest example of this virtue.
Being with the lowly suggests that humility includes identifying with those who are oppressed, poor, or considered lowly. It calls believers to compassion and empathy toward others, regardless of social status, and to a servant’s heart.
Biblical connections
The Bible teaches that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Pride leads to conflict and downfall, while humility brings honour and safety. Jesus Christ, though rich, became poor for our sake, showing that true greatness lies in serving others rather than in seeking power or wealth.
Application
This proverb encourages believers to cultivate humility daily, valuing relationships and the well-being of others above personal gain. It urges us to examine our associations and motivations, choosing fellowship with the humble even if it means material loss, rather than compromising with the proud for temporal reward.
True worth lies in character and attitude, not in wealth or status. A humble heart is content with God’s provision and does not envy those who prosper through pride. By embracing humility, we reflect the character of Christ and align our hearts with God’s values.
Reflection
This verse challenges us to prioritize humility, compassion, and relationships over worldly success and material gain. It reminds us that the eternal significance of a humble spirit far outweighs the temporary rewards of pride.
