Proverbs 16:20
“He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.”
Context: Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance and instructions for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 16:20 is part of a larger collection of proverbs that emphasize the importance of wisdom, understanding, and trust in the Lord.
Handling matters wisely: The verse starts by highlighting the importance of handling matters wisely. This implies making thoughtful and prudent decisions in various aspects of life, such as relationships, work, finances, and personal conduct. The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes the value of wisdom and discernment in navigating life’s challenges.
Finding good: The verse suggests that those who handle matters wisely will find good. This can be understood as experiencing positive outcomes and blessings. When we make wise choices, guided by principles of righteousness and understanding, we increase the likelihood of favourable outcomes in our lives. Wisdom leads to good results and helps us avoid unnecessary pitfalls and hardships.
Trusting in the Lord: The second part of the verse highlights the importance of placing our trust in the Lord. Trusting in God implies relying on His guidance, provision, and faithfulness. It involves acknowledging our dependence on Him rather than solely relying on our own understanding and abilities. Trusting in the Lord is an act of surrender and recognizing that He is the ultimate source of wisdom and blessing.
Happiness through trust: The verse concludes by stating that those who trust in the Lord will be happy. This happiness is not dependent on external circumstances or temporary pleasures but is rooted in a deep sense of contentment and well-being that comes from knowing and relying on God. Trusting in the Lord brings peace, joy, and a firm foundation amidst life’s challenges.
Overall, Proverbs 16:20 encourages us to approach life with wisdom, seeking to handle matters wisely, and placing our trust in the Lord. By doing so, we can experience the goodness and blessings that come from aligning our lives with God’s wisdom and relying on His faithfulness.
