Proverbs 2:22

But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

Context

Proverbs is wisdom literature from the Old Testament, mostly written by King Solomon. It teaches practical and moral lessons for living rightly. This verse closes a passage that contrasts the future of the righteous with the future of the wicked. The previous verse promises that the upright will dwell in the land, while this verse declares the opposite for the wicked.

Meaning

The verse uses two parallel images. “Cut off” suggests a sudden or judicial removal, often by death or by authority, before the wicked enjoy what they have gained. “Rooted out” pictures a plant pulled up by its roots, showing a thorough and complete removal. The “earth” or “land” means the promised land, the place of blessing and inheritance. The wicked are those who persist in unrighteousness and rebellion against God. Transgressors are those who cross the boundary of God’s commandments and continue in sinful behavior.

Biblical connections

This judgment is certain and severe, yet it is just. God is righteous and will not let evil prevail forever. The New Testament also teaches that the wicked will not inherit the new earth, while the righteous will. This verse warns that persistent sin leads to removal from God’s blessings.
