Proverbs 3:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:11

“For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and guidance on various aspects of life, including relationships, work, wealth, and spirituality. Proverbs 3:2 is part of a larger passage in which Solomon encourages his readers to embrace wisdom and trust in the Lord.

Seeking Wisdom:In the preceding verse, Proverbs 3:1, Solomon advises his readers to “forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments.” He emphasizes the importance of keeping God’s commands and cherishing His teachings. This sets the stage for understanding the benefits mentioned in Proverbs 3:2.

Length of Days:The phrase “length of days” refers to a long and fulfilling life. By following God’s commandments and embracing wisdom, we position ourselves to experience a life that is not cut short prematurely. God’s wisdom leads us away from destructive paths and helps us make choices that contribute to our physical and spiritual well-being.

Long Life:“Long life” can be understood both literally and metaphorically. In the literal sense, embracing wisdom and living according to God’s principles can promote physical health and longevity. Additionally, it can imply a life filled with God’s blessings, favour, and satisfaction. Through wisdom, we can make choices that lead to a fruitful and purposeful existence.

Peace:The word “peace” in this context refers to a state of tranquillity, harmony, and well-being. By seeking wisdom and following God’s commands, we align ourselves with His divine order. This leads to inner peace, as we trust in God’s guidance and rely on His faithfulness. Furthermore, wisdom enables us to navigate life’s challenges, conflicts, and uncertainties in a manner that promotes peace with others.

God’s Blessings:The phrase “shall they add to thee” suggests that these benefits—length of days, long life, and peace—are added or bestowed upon those who diligently seek wisdom and walk in obedience to God’s ways. When we prioritise wisdom and righteousness, God honours and rewards our faithfulness by bestowing these blessings upon us.

Application:Proverbs 3:2 encourages us to pursue wisdom, obey God’s commandments, and trust in His faithfulness. As we align our lives with His wisdom, we can experience a longer life, both physically and spiritually. This passage also reminds us of the importance of cultivating inner peace by relying on God’s guidance and seeking harmony with others.

  • Summary:Proverbs 3:2 teaches us that embracing wisdom, living according to God’s principles, and trusting in His faithfulness can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful life, characterised by length of days, long life, and peace.
