Proverbs 24:5

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

Proverbs 24:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, a collection of practical teachings for daily life. In ancient Israel, strength was often linked to military power, yet this proverb redefines true strength as rooted in wisdom and knowledge. The surrounding chapters contrast the wise with the foolish, showing that wisdom leads to life and honor, while folly leads to ruin.

The verse declares that a wise person is strong, and a person of knowledge increases strength. This does not deny physical power, but it places greater value on discernment and understanding. Wisdom enables sound decisions, resilience in hardship, and the ability to live purposefully. Knowledge, gained through learning and experience, builds on wisdom and adds to a person’s capacity to act effectively. The Hebrew word for strength here suggests might and ability, not just muscle. So the proverb teaches that wisdom and knowledge are a form of power that can overcome obstacles and guide others.

Throughout Proverbs, wisdom is closely tied to the fear of the Lord, as Proverbs 9:10 teaches. True wisdom begins with reverence for God and leads to knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 confirms that the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. Therefore, seeking wisdom is not merely an intellectual pursuit but a spiritual one that draws a person closer to God. Other translations, such as the ESV and CSB, also highlight that wisdom surpasses physical might, reinforcing the same truth.

Believers are encouraged to pursue wisdom and knowledge as a source of strength. This involves studying Scripture, learning from godly teachers, and applying truth in daily decisions. As wisdom grows, so does the ability to face challenges with confidence and to live in a way that honours God.

  • Wisdom provides strength for making wise choices.

  • Knowledge increases a person’s ability to serve and lead.

  • True strength is found in a life aligned with God’s principles.

Consider how you can grow in wisdom this week. What sources of knowledge can you draw from, and how can you apply them to your daily walk with God? Remember that the strength gained through wisdom is a gift from the Lord, available to all who seek Him.
