Proverbs 28:1

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Proverbs 28:1 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, who was known for his God-given wisdom. It gives practical instructions for righteous living and explores many aspects of human behaviour. This verse draws a clear contrast between the wicked and the righteous, showing how their inner lives differ.

The first part of the verse describes the wicked fleeing when no one pursues them. Their fear is not based on any real threat. A guilty conscience and the anticipation of judgment keep them restless and anxious. Even when they are safe, they expect trouble because their wrongdoing has robbed them of peace. Their actions, driven by selfish desires and often involving dishonesty, do not provide security. This inner turmoil is not grounded in external reality; it comes from within.

In contrast, the righteous are bold as a lion. This boldness is not arrogance or self-reliance. It is a quiet confidence that comes from integrity and a right relationship with God. The lion is a picture of strength and courage. The righteous can stand firm because they know they are living according to God’s commands. This courage is rooted in a clear conscience before God. The contrast is absolute: the wicked are haunted by fear even without a pursuer, while the righteous stand firm with boldness.

This proverb echoes the teaching that a clear conscience before God is the foundation for courage. When a person walks in obedience, they can trust in God’s guidance and protection. The verse does not promise that the righteous will never face danger, but it shows that their inner confidence is not shaken by external threats. The wicked, however, are their own worst enemies, tormented by their guilt. This wisdom is practical: living rightly before God brings a peace and boldness that the wicked cannot know.

This verse gives several practical insights for daily life:

  • Fear of consequences: The wicked live in constant fear of being caught or facing the results of their actions. This fear is a direct result of wrongdoing. As believers, we should avoid sinful behaviour that leads to guilt and anxiety.

  • Confidence in righteousness: When we live according to God’s principles, we can face challenges without fear. Our boldness comes from knowing that God is with us and will empower us to overcome obstacles.

  • Trust in God’s strength: The lion imagery emphasizes strength and courage. We rely on God’s strength, not our own, to face difficulties and opposition.

  • A call to righteous living: This verse encourages us to pursue righteousness daily. Our actions have consequences, and choosing the righteous path leads to a life marked by confidence and courage.

Consider whether any area of your life is filled with fear or anxiety because of wrongdoing. How can you cultivate greater confidence in your walk with God? Are you actively seeking to live righteously according to His principles? The book of Proverbs is filled with practical wisdom, and each verse offers valuable insights. Studying the whole book helps us understand its teachings more fully.
