Psalms 1:6
For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Psalms 1:6 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 1 opens the Book of Psalms and sets the theme for the whole collection. It contrasts two kinds of people: the righteous and the ungodly. The righteous delight in God’s law and meditate on it day and night, like a tree planted by streams of water. The ungodly are like chaff that the wind drives away. Verse 6 closes the psalm with a clear summary of both paths.
Meaning
The word “knoweth” in this verse means more than knowing facts about someone. In Hebrew thought, it points to deep, personal, and caring knowledge. The Lord watches over the righteous, guides them, and approves of their way of life. This is not distant observation but a close, covenantal relationship. The righteous are those who live according to God’s commands and seek to please Him in all they do.
The “way” of a person is the path or manner of life they choose. For the righteous, this way is known by the Lord, meaning He is intimately aware of their steps and takes an active interest in them. For the ungodly, their way shall perish. The ungodly are those who reject God’s ways and live contrary to His commands. Their path will not endure; it will end in ruin and eternal separation from God. The verse does not merely say the ungodly will perish, but that their way, the very course they have chosen, will come to nothing.
Biblical connections
This verse connects with the rest of Psalm 1. The righteous are like a tree planted by streams of water, fruitful and stable, because the Lord knows their way. The ungodly are like chaff, unstable and driven away, because their way is doomed. The contrast is not only about outward behavior but about the fundamental direction of one’s life, whether it is turned toward God or away from Him.
Application
Believers can find comfort in knowing that God sees their actions, motives, and desires. He cares for them and approves of their conduct. This assurance encourages them to keep walking in righteousness, even when life is hard. It also warns against the path of ungodliness, which leads to destruction. Reflecting on one’s choices helps a person see whether they are aligned with God’s Word. Trusting in God’s intimate knowledge brings peace, and praying for those on the wrong path shows love and hope for their turning to God.
Reflection
The verse calls every reader to examine the direction of their life. God’s knowledge of the righteous is their security, while the way of the ungodly is doomed. This truth invites a response of trust and obedience. It reminds us that a life rooted in God endures, while a life apart from Him fades away. The choice of which way to walk is before each person, and the outcome is certain.
