Psalms 10:10

He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

Psalms 10:10 (KJV)

Psalm 10 is a lament, a sorrowful prayer about the arrogance of the wicked and their oppression of the poor. The psalmist describes how the wicked hunt the helpless like a lion crouching before it springs on its prey. This picture shows both the cunning and the cruelty of those who oppress others.

The words “croucheth” and “humbleth himself” describe a false show of meekness. The wicked person hides his true cruelty behind a gentle appearance. His goal is that “the poor may fall by his strong ones,” meaning he uses his power and allies to crush the vulnerable. Like a fowler creeping along the ground to trap a bird, he deceives in order to destroy.

Earlier in the psalm, the wicked boast and believe that God will never see their deeds (Psalm 10:11). This verse shows the contrast between their outward pretense and inward violence. The same picture of a lurking enemy appears in Psalm 10:9, where the wicked wait in secret to catch the poor. The psalmist calls on God to arise and defend the helpless, trusting in His justice.

This verse warns us to be watchful. Some people appear humble and harmless, yet they exploit others for their own gain. We must not be naive, but we also must not become like them. God calls us to defend the poor and to act with true humility, not a false mask. We can ask God for discernment to see through deceptive appearances.

The psalmist does not end in despair. He trusts that God sees the oppression and will act as the righteous Judge. When we witness injustice, we can cry out to God, who cares for the helpless and will bring justice in His time. This hope gives us strength to keep doing what is right.
