Psalms 103:13

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

Psalms 103:13 (KJV)

Psalm 103 is a thanksgiving psalm attributed to King David. It praises God for His goodness, forgiveness, and compassion. This verse sits within a passage that celebrates God’s tender care for His people. The psalm as a whole emphasizes God’s forgiveness, healing, redemption, and steadfast love, showing that His pity is part of His covenant faithfulness.

The verse uses a simile: as a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. The Hebrew word for “pitieth” means tender compassion, mercy, and deep affection. A father’s pity involves care, protection, and provision. God’s compassion is personal and active toward those who revere Him. It is not distant or abstract; it is as real and tender as a father’s love.

The phrase “them that fear him” does not mean terror. It describes reverential awe, respect, and obedience. Those who fear God trust Him and submit to His authority. They receive His fatherly compassion. This fear is about standing in awe of Him and living in an obedient relationship with Him.

The fatherhood of God is a key theme in Scripture. God acts as a Father through adopting grace, caring for His people in affliction and distress. His pity is part of His covenant faithfulness, which includes forgiveness, healing, and redemption (Psalm 103:3-4). This compassion is especially evident when His children are in trouble. The verse assures believers that God’s compassion is as personal and tender as a father’s love.

Believers can find comfort in knowing that God understands their weaknesses. His compassion is available to those who fear Him. When we face trials, we can approach God with confidence, knowing He is merciful. Our response should be reverent trust and gratitude for His fatherly care. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s care, especially in times of weakness and need.

Consider how a loving earthly father cares for his children. God’s compassion is even greater and more perfect. He invites us to come to Him in our weakness, assured of His tender mercy. Let this truth encourage you to rest in His love and to walk in reverent obedience.
