Listen to this article

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Context:Psalm 103 is a beautiful hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God for His many blessings and abundant mercy. The psalmist reflects on God’s goodness and expresses gratitude for His forgiveness, healing, redemption, and loving-kindness.

1. Attributes of God:

  • a. Merciful:The Lord is compassionate and shows mercy to His people. He is full of tender love and kindness, extending His compassion to those who are in need and offering forgiveness to the repentant.
  • b. Gracious:God is characterized by His grace, which is His unmerited favor and goodness bestowed upon His creation. He freely blesses and bestows His kindness upon humanity, even though we do not deserve it.
  • c. Slow to anger:The psalmist acknowledges that God is patient and slow to become angry. He does not quickly lose His temper or give in to wrath, but instead shows longsuffering and restraint.
  • d. Plenteous in mercy:God’s mercy knows no bounds. He is rich in mercy, overflowing with compassion and forgiveness. His mercy is abundant, and He is generous in extending it to those who seek Him.

3. Practical Application:

  • a. Gratitude:Psalm 103 invites us to cultivate an attitude of thankfulness for God’s character and His abundant mercy. We can take time to reflect on the ways God has shown mercy in our lives and offer Him praise for His goodness.
  • b. Repentance and forgiveness:Knowing that God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, should encourage us to turn to Him in repentance when we have sinned. We can trust that He is willing to forgive us when we humbly seek His mercy.
  • c. Reflecting God’s attributes:As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate God’s character. We should strive to be merciful, gracious, patient, and forgiving in our interactions with others, extending the same love and kindness that God has shown us.
