Psalms 105:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:14

“He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant.”

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of praise, worship, thanksgiving, and reflection. Psalm 105 is a historical psalm that recounts God’s faithfulness to the nation of Israel, particularly focusing on the story of Joseph.

Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first son of Rachel. He had a special relationship with his father, which created jealousy among his brothers. They plotted against him and sold him into slavery in Egypt. However, God’s providence was at work, and Joseph eventually became a powerful ruler in Egypt, saving his family and the surrounding nations from a severe famine.

God’s sovereign plan:In verse 17, the psalmist acknowledges that God was the one who sent Joseph ahead of his brothers. This verse highlights the providential hand of God in using Joseph’s circumstances for His greater purpose. Despite Joseph’s suffering and hardship, God had a plan to fulfill His promises to the nation of Israel.

Divine guidance:The phrase “even Joseph, who was sold for a servant” emphasizes Joseph’s humble beginnings as a slave. Although he faced betrayal and unjust treatment, God used those circumstances to shape Joseph’s character and prepare him for a significant role in the future. Through Joseph’s journey, we learn that God can use even the most challenging situations to bring about His purposes.

Lessons for believers:

  • a. Trusting in God’s sovereignty:The story of Joseph reminds us to trust in God’s sovereign plan, even when we face difficult circumstances. God’s ways may not always be apparent or understandable to us, but we can have confidence that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
  • b. Perseverance through trials:Joseph’s life teaches us the importance of remaining faithful to God in the midst of trials. Despite being enslaved and imprisoned, Joseph continued to trust in God and maintained his integrity. His faithfulness eventually led to his exaltation and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
  • c. Forgiveness and reconciliation:Joseph’s encounter with his brothers after many years of separation and hardship demonstrates the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. Instead of seeking revenge, Joseph forgave his brothers and was reconciled with them. This serves as a powerful example for believers to extend grace and forgiveness to others, even in difficult circumstances.
