Psalms 105:35

Posted on 18 May at 15:14

“And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.”

Context:Psalm 105 is a song of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness and deliverance of the Israelites. It recounts the history of God’s covenant with Abraham and His fulfillment of that covenant by delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and leading them into the Promised Land. This particular verse refers to one of the plagues God sent upon Egypt as part of the Exodus narrative.

Divine Judgment:The verse describes how God caused a plague of locusts to devour the plants and crops in Egypt. This was a significant judgment upon the land and people of Egypt. It demonstrates that God has the power to bring judgment upon those who oppose Him or mistreat His people.

Control over Creation:God’s sovereignty over nature is evident in this verse. He used a natural phenomenon, locusts, to accomplish His purposes. It highlights God’s ability to use His creation for His divine plan. It also emphasizes that God has complete control over the earth and all its inhabitants.

Faithfulness to His People:Despite the devastation caused by the locusts, God’s purpose was ultimately to deliver the Israelites from slavery and lead them to the Promised Land. This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His people. He intervenes on their behalf and protects them, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Dependence on God:The verse also serves as a reminder of human dependence on God. The locusts’ destructive power rendered the Egyptians helpless, reminding them of their need for God’s provision. It underscores the importance of relying on God for sustenance and recognizing that all blessings come from Him.

Historical Significance:The events described in this verse are historically significant for the Israelites. They serve as a reminder of God’s miraculous intervention on their behalf and His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Reflecting on God’s past deliverance and provision can strengthen our faith and trust in Him today.

  • Gratitude and Praise:Like the psalmist, we can express gratitude and praise to God for His faithfulness and deliverance in our lives. We can recall and celebrate the times when God has provided for us, protected us, and brought us out of challenging situations.
  • Trust in God’s Sovereignty:Recognizing God’s control over creation and His ability to intervene in our circumstances should foster trust and reliance on Him. We can trust that He will bring about justice, protect His people, and accomplish His purposes in our lives.
  • Dependence on God’s Provision:Just as the Egyptians were reminded of their need for God’s provision, we should acknowledge our dependence on Him for our daily needs. We can seek His guidance and provision in our lives, trusting that He will supply all that we need according to His will.
  • Reflection on God’s Faithfulness:Reflecting on God’s faithfulness throughout history can strengthen our faith. Studying the biblical accounts of God’s deliverance and provision serves as a reminder of His character and encourages us to trust Him in our current circumstances.

Remember that studying Scripture is a lifelong journey, and it is beneficial to explore the entire context of the Bible to gain a deeper understanding of God’s message and His plan for humanity.
