Psalms 105:36

Listen to this article

“He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s important to look at the context of the entire psalm. Psalm 105 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness to the Israelites throughout their history. It recounts the story of God’s covenant with Abraham and His deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, highlighting various events and miracles.

The Plague of the Firstborn:The verse specifically refers to one of the plagues that God brought upon Egypt during the time of Moses. In Exodus 12, we read about the final and most devastating plague, which was the death of the firstborn in Egypt. God struck down every firstborn in the land, from Pharaoh’s household to the lowliest captive in the dungeon.

Judgment and Liberation:The context of this verse highlights God’s judgment on the Egyptians and His act of liberation for the Israelites. The plagues were a demonstration of God’s power and His commitment to deliver His people from slavery. By smiting the firstborn, God displayed His supremacy over the false gods of Egypt and brought about the release of the Israelites from their bondage.

Chief of all their strength:The phrase “the chief of all their strength” in this verse can be understood as a reference to the mightiest and most prominent members of Egyptian society. The firstborn sons were often the heirs and future leaders, representing the strength and potential of a family or a nation. By striking down the firstborn, God dealt a severe blow to the power structure and the pride of Egypt.

  • Spiritual Lessons:This verse reminds us of several spiritual lessons. Firstly, it reveals God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring judgment on those who oppose His plans and oppress His people. Secondly, it demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. Despite the suffering and hardships the Israelites endured in Egypt, God remained true to His word and brought about their liberation. Lastly, it points to the importance of acknowledging and honoring God as the ultimate source of strength and power.
  • As you reflect on Psalms 105:36, consider how it encourages you to trust in God’s faithfulness, recognize His sovereignty, and acknowledge Him as the chief of your strength.
