Psalms 106:14

Listen to this article

“But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.”

Psalm 106:14 (KJV) states: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

Context and Background:Psalm 106 is part of the Book of Psalms, which is a collection of poetic songs and prayers. It is attributed to King David and other authors. This psalm focuses on recounting Israel’s history, acknowledging both their disobedience and God’s faithfulness.

Wilderness Journey:The wilderness journey mentioned in Psalm 106:14 refers to the time when the Israelites were led by Moses out of Egypt, through the wilderness, and towards the Promised Land. This period is described in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Lusting Exceedingly:The phrase “But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness” refers to the Israelites’ uncontrolled desires and cravings while they were in the wilderness. Despite God’s provision of manna (a miraculous food) and water, the Israelites grumbled and complained, expressing their longing for the food they had in Egypt (Exodus 16:1-3; Numbers 11:4-6).

Their excessive longing and dissatisfaction with God’s provision demonstrated a lack of trust in His faithfulness and provision.

Tempting God in the Desert:The second part of the verse, “and tempted God in the desert,” refers to the Israelites’ repeated testing of God’s patience, power, and faithfulness during their time in the desert.

The Israelites tested God’s patience through their complaints, questioning His ability to provide for them, and even resorting to idolatry by worshiping a golden calf (Exodus 32:1-8). These acts of disobedience challenged God’s sovereignty and provoked His anger.

Lessons and Application:

  • a) Trust in God’s Provision:Just as God provided for the Israelites’ needs in the wilderness, we should trust in God’s faithfulness to provide for us. Instead of lusting after worldly desires, we should seek contentment in God’s provision and have faith that He will meet our needs.
  • b) Gratitude and Contentment:We should cultivate an attitude of gratitude and contentment, recognizing and appreciating what God has provided. Grumbling and discontentment can hinder our spiritual growth and lead us away from God’s blessings.
  • c) Avoiding Temptation:The Israelites’ disobedience serves as a warning to us to avoid testing God or tempting Him through our actions and attitudes. We should strive to remain obedient to God’s commands and trust in His plans.
  • d) Learning from History:The psalmist’s recounting of Israel’s history reminds us of the importance of learning from past mistakes. By studying the Bible and reflecting on God’s dealings with His people, we can gain wisdom and avoid repeating the same errors.

Overall, Psalm 106:14 challenges us to examine our hearts, trust in God’s provision, and remain faithful to Him, learning from the lessons of the past.
