Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

Context

Psalm 107 is a thanksgiving psalm. It calls on those whom the Lord has redeemed to praise Him for His steadfast love and wonderful works. The chapter tells how God delivered His people from wandering in the wilderness, from prison, from sickness, and from storms at sea. Verse 32 is the climax of the first major section, where the redeemed are summoned to exalt God publicly.

Meaning

To exalt God means to lift Him up, to honor Him, and to give Him the highest place in our lives. The Hebrew word carries the idea of extolling or raising high. Praise involves giving thanks and declaring God’s worth. This verse calls for praise in two settings: the congregation of the people and the assembly of the elders. The congregation refers to the gathered people of God, those called out from the world to worship Him. The assembly of the elders points to the leaders and wise men of the community.
