1. Context:Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving and praise to God for His steadfast love and deliverance. It is divided into four sections, each highlighting a different aspect of God’s redemption. This verse comes toward the end of the psalm and emphasizes God’s care for the poor and His ability to restore and bless them.

2. Exposition:

a. “Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction”: This verse speaks of God’s intervention on behalf of the poor and oppressed. Despite their difficult circumstances, God lifts them up and delivers them from affliction. It emphasizes God’s compassion for the needy and His ability to change their situation.

b. “And maketh him families like a flock”: Here, the psalmist describes God’s provision of not only deliverance from affliction but also the establishment of a community or a family for the poor. God takes care of their needs, giving them a sense of belonging and security. The imagery of a flock suggests the unity, guidance, and protection provided by a loving shepherd.

3. Application:

a. God’s concern for the poor:This verse highlights God’s special concern for the poor and downtrodden. It demonstrates that God sees their affliction and is willing and able to lift them up from their circumstances. As believers, we are called to imitate God’s compassion and extend help and support to those in need, following the example set by Christ Himself (Matthew 25:31-46).

b. Restoration and blessing:The verse reminds us that God is not only interested in delivering us from affliction but also in restoring and blessing us. He has the power to transform our lives and provide us with a sense of belonging and community. In times of difficulty, we can find comfort in knowing that God is able to bring about restoration and establish us in a place of blessing.

c. Unity and care within the community:The reference to families being made like a flock suggests the importance of unity and care within the community of believers. As a family of faith, we are called to support and care for one another. Just as a shepherd tends to the needs of the flock, we should strive to be loving and compassionate, providing a safe and nurturing environment for those around us.
