Listen to this article

“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”

Understanding the context:It is important to consider the context of a verse to grasp its full meaning. Psalm 107 begins with an invitation to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and it recounts various instances of God’s deliverance and provision for His people. The psalmist emphasizes the redemption of God’s people from various troubles and their need to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving.

Symbolic meaning:In the verse under study, the “longing soul” and the “hungry soul” symbolize the deep spiritual longing and hunger that individuals experience. This longing and hunger can arise from various sources, such as a sense of emptiness, dissatisfaction, or a desire for meaning and purpose in life.

God’s satisfaction:The psalmist declares that God “satisfieth the longing soul.” This implies that God has the power and desire to fulfill the deepest needs and desires of the human soul. The satisfaction God provides goes beyond material blessings or physical nourishment. It speaks to the spiritual and emotional nourishment that only God can provide.

God’s goodness:The verse continues, stating that God “filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” Here, the psalmist emphasizes God’s benevolence and kindness towards those who seek Him. God not only satisfies the longing soul but also fills it with goodness. This goodness encompasses His love, mercy, grace, and blessings.

Application:This verse reminds believers of God’s ability to satisfy the deepest longings and hunger of their souls. It points to the fact that our ultimate fulfilment and satisfaction come from a relationship with God. It encourages us to turn to Him in our times of longing and hunger, trusting that He will meet our needs and pour out His goodness upon us.

  • Summary:Psalms 107:9 (KJV) assures us that God is able to satisfy the longing soul and fill the hungry soul with His goodness. It reminds us to seek God for true fulfilment and to trust in His provision for our spiritual and emotional needs.
