Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Context

Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s deliverance. It opens with a call to thank the Lord because His mercy endures forever. The psalm then gives four pictures of people in trouble who cry out to God and are saved. Verse 8 is a refrain that repeats four times in the psalm, at verses 8, 15, 21, and 31. Each time it follows a specific act of rescue. Here, the immediate setting is travelers who lost their way in the wilderness. They were hungry and thirsty, and their souls fainted within them. When they cried to the Lord, He led them by the right way to a city where they could live. This verse is their joyful response, and it becomes a pattern for all who have been helped by God.

Meaning

The verse expresses a deep desire: “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” The word “goodness” points to God’s kindness, mercy, and faithful love. His “wonderful works” are His mighty acts of creation, deliverance, provision, and salvation. These works are extraordinary and beyond human understanding. The phrase “children of men” shows that God’s care is not limited to one nation or group. It reaches all people, whatever their background or condition. Praise is the proper response to such grace. It means thanking God, honoring Him, and telling others what He has done.

Biblical connections

The same refrain appears in Psalm 107:15, 21, and 31, each time after another deliverance. This repetition teaches that praise should be constant, not occasional. God’s goodness is also seen in His redemption. He brings people out of a wilderness of sin and supplies them with spiritual food and drink. The travelers’ rescue from physical danger is a picture of a deeper rescue: God saving lost souls and leading them safely home.

Believers can apply this verse by making thanksgiving a daily habit. When we remember God’s goodness in our own lives, our hearts turn to praise. We can also share with others the reasons for our gratitude, encouraging them to join in glorifying God. This verse calls us to see God’s hand in both small provisions and great deliverances.

Consider the times when you were lost or in trouble and God answered your cry. Let those memories become reasons for praise. The psalmist’s longing is that no one would remain silent about God’s wonderful works. Our praise not only honors God but also strengthens our own faith and witnesses to others.
