Psalms 107:7

And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

Context

Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s steadfast love and His saving help. The verses just before this one describe travelers lost in a desert wilderness, hungry and thirsty, with their souls fainting within them. They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them. This verse is the turning point: God answers their cry by leading them out of the wasteland.

Meaning

The Hebrew word translated “right” means straight, direct, or correct. God does not merely rescue His people from trouble; He sets them on a purposeful path. The “city of habitation” is a place of settled dwelling, safety, and provision. It stands in contrast to the trackless waste where they had wandered. God’s guidance is not vague; it has a clear destination.

This guidance is active and personal. The verse says “he led them forth,” showing that God Himself takes the initiative. He does not leave His people to find their own way. He goes before them, and His way is right because it leads directly to His intended provision and fellowship with Him. The path is straight, so that even the simple will not err in it.

Biblical connections

This verse also points to a greater spiritual reality. God leads awakened and inquiring souls to the right way of salvation, which is Christ, who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). The “city of habitation” foreshadows our eternal dwelling place with God, where our deepest hunger and thirst will be fully satisfied. This hope gives us courage to keep following Him even when the way is hard.

Our proper response is heartfelt thanksgiving. As we remember God’s unfailing love and wonderful deeds, we find encouragement. His faithful leading will always bring His people to a place of true and lasting peace.
