Psalms 109:31

Listen to this article

“For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.”

1. Context and Background: Psalm 109 is attributed to King David, and it is categorized as a lament or a psalm of complaint. In this psalm, David expresses his distress and calls upon God to judge his enemies who have treated him unjustly.

The phrase “he shall stand at the right hand of the poor” refers to God’s intervention and support for the vulnerable and oppressed. In biblical times, the right hand symbolized a position of honor, power, and protection. God promises to come to the aid of those who are weak and defenseless, to stand beside them and protect them from harm.

The verse goes on to say that God will save the poor from those who condemn their souls. This speaks to God’s role as a just judge who defends the innocent and brings justice to the oppressed. It emphasizes that God sees and hears the cries of the needy and acts on their behalf. The salvation mentioned here is not just physical deliverance but also the vindication of their character and the restoration of their dignity.

As followers of God, we are called to have a heart of compassion for those who are marginalized, oppressed, or in need. This verse encourages us to stand with the poor and advocate for their well-being, just as God does.

As Christians, we can see the ultimate fulfilment of this verse in Jesus Christ. Jesus stands at the right hand of God, interceding for us (Romans 8:34). He came to save the poor, the brokenhearted, and the oppressed (Luke 4:18). Through His sacrifice on the cross and resurrection, Jesus offers salvation and deliverance to all who put their trust in Him.
