Psalms 110:2

The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

Psalms 110:2 (KJV)

Psalm 110 is a royal and messianic psalm attributed to King David. In the previous verse, David records the LORD speaking to his Lord, a figure seated at God’s right hand. This verse continues that address, declaring that the LORD sends the rod of strength out of Zion.

“The LORD” is Yahweh, the covenant God of Israel, who acts personally for His people. The phrase “the rod of thy strength” symbolizes authority and royal power. In the ancient Near East, a rod or scepter was a sign of a ruler’s dominion. Here, it is the Messiah’s scepter, given by God the Father, and it originates from Zion, the city of Jerusalem, which represents the dwelling place of God’s presence.

The command “rule thou in the midst of thine enemies” declares that the Messiah’s reign is exercised even in the presence of adversaries. This rule is not without opposition; it is certain because God Himself sends the scepter. The Messiah’s authority is divinely appointed and extends from Zion.

This verse finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the descendant of David. He is the one who possesses the rod of strength and rules over His enemies. His authority was demonstrated through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension. The New Testament sees His kingdom advancing through the preaching of the gospel, which went forth from Jerusalem to the whole world. The rod is also understood as the gospel itself, the power of God unto salvation, which is mighty through Christ for bringing people into obedience to Him.

Psalm 110:2 reminds us of the sovereignty and power of God. It assures us that, despite the challenges and opposition we may face, God is in control and will establish His kingdom. It encourages us to trust in Jesus Christ, who has overcome the world and rules over all. It also reminds us of the victory we have in Christ and the hope we have in His ultimate triumph.

Consider the certainty of Christ’s rule. Even when enemies seem strong, the Father has given Him all authority. We can live with confidence, knowing that His kingdom cannot fail and that we share in His victory through faith.
