Psalms 11:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:18

“For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.”

Psalm 11:7 (KJV) says: “For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.”

Context of Psalm 11:Psalm 11 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of trust in God’s protection. In this psalm, David expresses confidence in the Lord’s righteous judgment and guidance. He acknowledges that even when the foundations of society seem to crumble, God remains steadfast and watches over the righteous.

Understanding Psalm 11:7:

Psalm 11:7 highlights two key aspects of God’s character: His love for righteousness and His attention towards the upright.

a) “For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness”:

Here, “the righteous LORD” refers to God Himself. This phrase emphasizes God’s own righteousness and His commitment to upholding what is just and right. God’s very nature is characterized by righteousness, and He loves to see righteousness prevail in the world.

b) “His countenance doth behold the upright”:

The “countenance” refers to God’s face or presence. It signifies God’s attentiveness, care, and favour. The phrase “behold the upright” suggests that God watches over, observes, and pays close attention to those who live in righteousness. He is intimately involved with their lives and provides guidance, protection, and blessings.

Lessons from Psalm 11:7:

  • God’s love for righteousness:This verse reminds us that God deeply cares about justice and righteousness. As His followers, we should align our lives with His standards of righteousness and strive to do what is right in His eyes. We should love what God loves and stand against injustice, immorality, and unrighteousness.
  • God’s watchful care:The phrase “His countenance doth behold the upright” reassures us of God’s watchful presence in our lives. When we live in righteousness, God takes notice and is actively involved in our well-being. We can trust in His guidance, protection, and provision.
  • Encouragement for the righteous:This verse serves as an encouragement to those who seek to live upright lives. It reminds us that God sees our efforts and rewards our faithfulness. Even when faced with challenges, we can have confidence that God is with us, and He will ensure justice and vindication.

Application to our lives:

  • Seek righteousness:We should strive to live in accordance with God’s righteous standards, following His commandments and seeking justice and righteousness in our actions and decisions.
  • Trust in God’s presence:When we face difficult situations or when the foundations around us seem to crumble, we can trust in God’s presence and care. Knowing that He beholds the upright, we can find peace and assurance, knowing that God is watching over us.
  • Stand firm in righteousness:Despite the pressures and temptations of the world, let us remain steadfast in our pursuit of righteousness. We can find strength and encouragement in the knowledge that God loves and supports those who seek to do what is right.

In summary, Psalm 11:7 emphasises God’s love for righteousness and His attentive care for the upright. As we strive to live in righteousness, we can find confidence in God’s presence, knowing that He watches over us and rewards our faithfulness.
