Psalms 12:1

“Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Psalm 12:1 in the King James Version:

Verse: “Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.” (Psalm 12:1, KJV)

1. Context: Psalm 12 is attributed to King David and is classified as a psalm of lament. It addresses the need for God’s intervention in a time of trouble, expressing concern over the scarcity of righteous people and the prevalence of deception and wickedness in the world.

2. Cry for Help: The psalm begins with a plea for assistance: “Help, Lord.” David turns to God, acknowledging that only the Lord can provide the help and deliverance he needs. This reflects the psalmist’s recognition of his own limitations and his reliance on God’s strength and guidance.

3. The Disappearing Godly: David expresses his distress over the scarcity of godly individuals. He laments that the “godly man ceaseth” and the “faithful fail from among the children of men.” The righteous seem to be diminishing or disappearing from society, which can lead to a sense of isolation and despair.

4. A World in Moral Decline: This verse highlights the prevalence of unfaithfulness and wickedness among the people. David perceives a moral decay where faithfulness to God and integrity in relationships are becoming rare. The psalmist’s concern emphasizes the need for righteous people to stand firm and serve as a light in a dark world.

5. The Need for God’s Intervention: By addressing his cry to the Lord, David expresses his confidence in God’s ability to intervene and restore righteousness. The psalmist recognizes that human efforts alone are insufficient to address the challenges of a world plagued by unfaithfulness and deception. This verse reminds us to turn to God in times of trouble, seeking His guidance, strength, and restoration.

Application:

  • – Trust in God’s Help: When facing challenges or feeling overwhelmed by the prevalence of wickedness, we can follow David’s example and cry out to the Lord for help. Recognizing our limitations and relying on God’s strength can bring comfort and assurance.
  • – Be a Faithful Witness: In a world where faithfulness and godly values may seem scarce, we are called to be a light and reflect God’s righteousness. Let us strive to live with integrity and remain faithful to God, shining His love and truth in our words and actions.
  • – Pray for Revival: Just as David pleaded for God’s intervention, we can intercede for our communities and the world, asking for a revival of godliness. Praying for the restoration of faith and the transformation of hearts can contribute to positive change and the spread of righteousness.
