Listen to this article

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

Context of Psalm 111:Psalm 111 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving. It celebrates the greatness and faithfulness of God, highlighting His works and attributes. The psalmist expresses gratitude and acknowledges the LORD’s righteous acts, His provision, and the wisdom found in obeying His commandments.

“The fear of the LORD”:The verse begins by stating that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. In the biblical context, “fear” does not imply terror or fright, but rather reverence, awe, and deep respect for God. This fear recognizes the holiness, majesty, and authority of God. It acknowledges His infinite wisdom and power, realizing that He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

“The beginning of wisdom”:This phrase suggests that true wisdom starts with a proper understanding of and reverence for God. It implies that to have a wise and fulfilling life, we must acknowledge God’s sovereignty and align our hearts and actions with His will. Without this foundational fear of the LORD, any claim to wisdom is incomplete and hollow.

“A good understanding have all they that do His commandments”:Those who fear the LORD and walk in obedience to His commandments gain true understanding and insight. The psalmist emphasizes that knowledge and wisdom are not mere intellectual pursuits but are intertwined with practical obedience to God’s precepts. By aligning our lives with God’s Word, we develop discernment and gain a deeper understanding of His ways.

“His praise endureth forever”:The psalm concludes by highlighting the eternal nature of God’s praise. God’s works, His faithfulness, and His attributes are worthy of everlasting praise. The psalmist reminds us that God’s praise is not limited to a specific time or circumstance but endures throughout all generations. It serves as a reminder to continually offer praise and worship to the LORD for His unfailing goodness and grace.
