Psalms 111:9

Posted on 18 May at 15:13
Listen to this article

“He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.”

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetry and songs attributed to various authors, including King David. Psalm 111 is a psalm of praise, celebrating God’s wonderful works and attributes.

Redemption:The verse begins by acknowledging that God sent redemption to His people. In the Old Testament, this often referred to God’s deliverance and salvation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It can also be understood as a foreshadowing of the ultimate redemption through Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Jesus, as the Son of God, came to offer salvation and deliverance to all who believe in Him.

Covenant:The verse goes on to state that God has commanded His covenant forever. The covenant refers to the agreement or promise that God made with His people. In the Old Testament, God established a covenant with the Israelites, starting with Abraham and later with Moses. This covenant included laws, blessings, and promises. The New Testament reveals the new covenant through Jesus Christ, which is based on grace and faith in Him.

Holy and Reverend:The verse concludes by describing God’s name as holy and reverend. This emphasizes the sacred and awe-inspiring nature of God. It highlights the need for reverence and respect towards God’s name and character. As believers, we are called to honour and worship God with reverence and awe, acknowledging His holiness and majesty.

Overall, Psalms 111:9 reminds us of God’s redemptive work, His everlasting covenant, and the need to approach Him with reverence. It encourages us to reflect on God’s faithfulness and to respond with praise and worship.
