Psalms 112:2

His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

Psalms 112:2 (KJV)

Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm that praises the righteous and describes the blessings that come upon those who fear and obey the Lord. The verse immediately preceding, Psalm 112:1, establishes the identity of the man being described: “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.” Psalm 112:2 is the first specific blessing promised to this man, focusing on his descendants and the enduring nature of his legacy.

The verse has two parallel lines. The first, “His seed shall be mighty upon earth,” refers to the descendants or offspring of the righteous man. The Hebrew word for “seed” (zera) is a collective singular, referring to his children and future generations. “Mighty upon earth” implies strength, influence, and impact in their respective spheres. The second line, “the generation of the upright shall be blessed,” emphasizes the continuity of blessing. The “generation of the upright” refers to the community or lineage of those who are righteous, and the promise is that this group will be blessed. The two lines together teach that the righteousness of one generation has a direct and positive impact on the next.

Commentators note that this promise must be understood in a spiritual sense, not merely a literal or material one. The Targum (an Aramaic paraphrase) interprets “mighty” as “mighty in the law,” suggesting spiritual strength and proficiency in God’s Word. This is consistent with the New Testament example of Apollos, who is described as “mighty in the scriptures” (Acts 18:24). The promise is for those descendants who also fear the Lord and love him, according to the principle stated in Exodus 20:6, which speaks of God showing mercy to those who love him and keep his commandments. It is not a blanket promise of worldly power for all biological descendants, for “not many mighty are called” (1 Corinthians 1:26). Rather, it is a promise of spiritual strength and influence in the Lord and in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Some interpreters understand this verse to refer to the spiritual seed of Christ, seeing the man who feared the Lord as a type of Christ, who was heard in that he feared and whose spiritual offspring are mighty through him. This connection aligns with the New Testament teaching that believers are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:29).

Faithfulness and obedience to God’s commands have generational effects. The passage highlights the positive influence of a righteous person’s life on future generations. Our actions and choices today can have a lasting impact on our children, grandchildren, and beyond. By living uprightly, we can leave a godly legacy that continues to bless our descendants.

The importance of raising godly offspring is a key application. This verse reminds us of the significance of raising children in the fear and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). By nurturing them in the ways of God and teaching them His Word, we can contribute to their spiritual growth and the development of their character.

Blessings accompany righteousness. The psalm underscores the idea that the righteous will experience blessings in their lives. While these blessings may vary from person to person, they can include spiritual blessings, emotional well-being, provision, favour, and a sense of purpose and fulfilment. It’s important to note that these blessings are not solely material but encompass all areas of life.

Seeking God’s righteousness is essential. To partake in the promises of this verse, we should strive to live in righteousness, seeking God’s ways and following His commands. It involves cultivating a heart that loves and fears the Lord, aligning our actions with His principles, and walking in obedience to His Word. By doing so, we position ourselves and our descendants to receive the blessings and favour that God promises to the upright.

Psalm 112:2 encourages us to live righteous lives, promising that the descendants of the upright will have a significant impact on the earth and will be blessed by God. It reminds us of the generational effects of our choices and the importance of raising godly offspring. By seeking God’s righteousness and living uprightly, we can experience His blessings and leave a lasting spiritual legacy.
