Listen to this article

“Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.”

1. Context: Understanding the background and context of a verse is important for its interpretation. Psalm 115 is a psalm of praise and trust in God. It emphasizes the greatness of God compared to idols and the need for complete trust in Him.

2. Fear of the Lord: The verse begins by addressing those who fear the Lord. This “fear” does not refer to being terrified of God but rather having a deep reverence and respect for Him. It signifies recognizing God’s authority, holiness, and power. The fear of the Lord is often associated with wisdom and obedience to His commandments.

3. Trust in the Lord: The psalmist encourages those who fear the Lord to put their trust in Him. Trusting in the Lord means relying on Him completely, believing in His faithfulness, and depending on Him for guidance, provision, and protection. Trusting in the Lord involves surrendering our own understanding and leaning on His wisdom and ways.

4. He is their help: The psalmist assures that God is the help of those who fear Him and put their trust in Him. God is not distant or uninvolved but actively helps and supports His people. He comes to the aid of those who seek Him, providing assistance, strength, and deliverance in times of trouble. This promise of help highlights the loving and caring nature of God towards His faithful followers.

5. He is their shield: In addition to being a help, God is also described as a shield. A shield is a protective covering that shields from harm and danger. In the spiritual sense, God acts as a shield, guarding His people from various threats, including spiritual attacks, adversity, and enemies. He provides a refuge and defense for those who trust in Him, ensuring their safety and well-being.

6. Application: Psalm 115:11 reminds believers of the importance of fearing the Lord and placing their trust in Him. It emphasizes that true security, help, and protection come from God alone. As we fear God, acknowledge His greatness, and trust in Him, we can experience His active involvement in our lives, receiving His help and finding refuge in Him.
