Psalms 119:142

Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

Psalms 119:142 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and it celebrates God’s word through many names: law, testimonies, precepts, statutes, and commandments. The psalmist speaks with deep love for God’s instructions and for the righteousness that comes from following them. In this verse, he makes two bold statements about God’s character.

The first statement is that God’s righteousness is everlasting. The Hebrew word for everlasting, olam, means unending duration. God’s righteousness is not temporary or changeable; it endures forever. Righteousness means moral uprightness and perfect justice. God is the ultimate standard of what is right and good, and His nature never shifts.

The second statement is that God’s law is the truth. The law refers to God’s instructions and commandments for holy living. The psalmist affirms that God’s law is reliable, faithful, and consistent with God’s own character. Because God is true, His word is true. His law reveals His nature and gives His people a moral compass.

This verse connects God’s righteousness and His truth as two sides of the same reality. God’s righteousness is revealed in His law, and His law is the embodiment of truth. The New Testament shows that the righteousness of God is fully revealed in Jesus Christ, who fulfills the law and offers righteousness to believers. Yet the moral standards of God’s law remain valuable for guiding His people.

Believers can trust in God’s unchanging righteousness even when life is hard. His truth is a firm foundation for faith and obedience. By following God’s law, we align ourselves with His righteous standards and experience the blessings of living in harmony with His truth.

God’s righteousness and truth are not abstract ideas; they are the ground of our hope. Because He is righteous, we can rely on His justice and mercy. Because His word is true, we can build our lives on it without fear.
