Psalms 119:164

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.”

Psalm 119:164 (KJV):

“Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.”

Context of Psalm 119:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the Word of God. It consists of 176 verses divided into 22 sections, each section starting with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist expresses his deep love for God’s law, statutes, commandments, and precepts throughout this chapter.

Understanding Psalm 119:164:

In verse 164, the psalmist proclaims that he praises God seven times a day because of His righteous judgments. This verse highlights the psalmist’s commitment to continually praising God throughout the day, not just in one particular moment.

The significance of “seven times”:The number seven often carries symbolic meaning in the Bible, representing completeness, perfection, or fullness. In this context, praising God seven times a day signifies an all-encompassing, constant, and diligent praise. It implies that the psalmist’s praise is not limited to a specific time or occasion but rather a consistent pattern throughout the day.

Praising God because of His righteous judgments:The psalmist’s praise is not solely based on personal circumstances or blessings but specifically because of God’s righteous judgments. God’s judgments refer to His decisions, decrees, and laws, which are grounded in righteousness, justice, and truth. The psalmist recognizes and appreciates the wisdom and righteousness of God’s judgments, leading him to express praise and adoration.

Lessons and application:

  • Consistent praise:The psalmist’s example encourages us to cultivate a habit of praising God consistently. Rather than reserving praise for special occasions or only in times of blessing, we should adopt a lifestyle of continual praise, recognizing God’s goodness and righteous judgments throughout each day.
  • Focusing on God’s Word:Psalm 119 as a whole emphasizes the importance of God’s Word and the psalmist’s love for it. As we engage with the Scriptures, we can find numerous reasons to praise God-His character, His faithfulness, His promises, and His righteous judgments.
  • Acknowledging God’s wisdom:The psalmist’s praise is centered on God’s righteous judgments. It reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours, and His judgments are perfect and just. When we encounter difficult circumstances or face challenging decisions, we can trust in God’s wisdom and find reasons to praise Him even in the midst of trials.
  • Worship as a daily discipline:Praise and worship should not be confined to formal settings or specific times but should become a part of our daily routine. By intentionally setting aside moments throughout the day to offer praise, we create a deeper connection with God and cultivate a heart of gratitude.

In conclusion, Psalm 119:164 teaches us the importance of consistent praise, rooted in an understanding of God’s righteous judgments. It encourages us to make worship a daily discipline and to recognize God’s wisdom and righteousness in all aspects of life.
