Psalms 119:165

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”

1. Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the value and importance of God’s law. It consists of 176 verses, each praising and meditating on God’s Word. The psalmist expresses his love for God’s law and seeks understanding, wisdom, and obedience in following it.

The psalmist declares that those who love God’s law experience great peace. This peace goes beyond a mere absence of conflict or turmoil. It is a deep sense of well-being, tranquility, and contentment that comes from having a close relationship with God and aligning one’s life with His principles. It is a peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).

2. Great peace: The psalmist emphasizes that the key to experiencing great peace is to love God’s law. This implies more than just a casual interest or compliance with a set of rules. It involves a genuine affection, devotion, and delight in God’s Word. The law represents God’s revealed will, His instructions, and His wisdom for righteous living. When we love God’s law, we seek to understand it, treasure it in our hearts, and live according to its precepts.

3. Love for God’s law: The psalmist further states that those who love God’s law will not be easily offended. This does not mean they will never encounter situations or people that might cause offense, but it means that they will not stumble or be easily shaken by them. Their inner peace and security, grounded in their love for God’s law, enable them to remain steadfast in their faith, unaffected by the provocations or stumbling blocks that may come their way.

4. Nothing shall offend them: To experience the great peace described in this verse, it is essential to develop a deep love and appreciation for God’s Word. Make time to read, study, and meditate on the Scriptures regularly. Seek to understand the principles, wisdom, and teachings contained within it.

Loving God’s law involves not only knowing it but also applying it to our lives. Actively seek to obey God’s commands and live according to His precepts. This requires surrendering our will to His and aligning our actions with His revealed truth.

When we love God’s Word, we gain a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of God’s ways. This can help us navigate challenging situations without being easily offended. Cultivate a spirit of grace, forgiveness, and humility, keeping in mind that our ultimate allegiance is to God and His truth.

As we love God’s law and seek to live according to it, we can trust in God’s promise of peace. Even in the midst of trials and difficulties, we can experience a supernatural peace that comes from knowing that God is with us, guiding us, and working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
