Psalms 119:28

My soule melteth for heauines: strengthen thou me according vnto thy word. Psalms 119:28 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is composed as an acrostic poem of 22 sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Throughout the psalm the writer declares a deep love for God’s law and a desire to live in accordance with it.

In verse 28 the psalmist confesses that his soul is heavy, indicating a profound emotional burden, distress, or sadness. The language conveys that the author feels overwhelmed by the challenges, difficulties, and sorrows that life presents.

Recognizing his own insufficiency, the psalmist turns to God for help, acknowledging a humble and dependent posture. He admits that only God can provide the strength and comfort needed, and therefore seeks divine intervention rather than relying on his own abilities or human solutions.

The appeal to be strengthened “according unto thy word” reflects a trust in the power and reliability of Scripture. The psalmist also puts his hope in the word of the LORD, understanding that God’s promises, principles, and teachings are the key to finding encouragement and resilience in difficult times.

Application to our lives follows naturally. First, we are called to be honest with God about our emotional struggles, pouring out our deepest concerns and finding solace in His presence. Second, we should seek God’s strength, recognizing that He delights in providing it to those who turn to Him in moments of heaviness. Third, we are urged to anchor ourselves in God’s Word, meditating on its truths and applying its guidance for wisdom, comfort, and direction. Finally, we can trust in God’s promises, holding fast to the firm foundation of His faithful and trustworthy Word, which sustains us amid adversity.
