Psalms 22:14

Listen to this article

“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.”

Psalm 22 is a poetic and prophetic psalm written by King David. It begins with a cry of despair but gradually shifts to a note of hope and praise. It is often referred to as a Messianic psalm because many of its verses find fulfillment in the life, suffering, and triumph of Jesus Christ.

Psalm 22:14 (KJV) says: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.”

This verse is a vivid description of the physical and emotional suffering experienced by the psalmist, which also finds its ultimate fulfillment in the suffering of Jesus on the cross. Let’s break it down and explore its significance:

“I am poured out like water”: This phrase conveys the idea of complete exhaustion and weakness. It depicts the psalmist’s strength being drained away, leaving him utterly spent. Similarly, Jesus experienced extreme physical exhaustion and weakness during his crucifixion, as he was beaten, flogged, and nailed to the cross.

“All my bones are out of joint”: This vividly portrays a state of severe physical anguish. It suggests a complete loss of bodily strength and coordination. While it is not explicitly mentioned in the Gospel accounts, Jesus endured intense physical suffering on the cross, including the dislocation of joints due to the strain of his body weight.

“My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels”: This metaphorical language depicts the psalmist’s emotional distress. The melting of the heart represents the collapse of strength and courage, signifying overwhelming sorrow and despair. This verse captures the deep anguish Jesus experienced during his crucifixion, both physically and emotionally, as he bore the weight of the sins of humanity.

It is important to note that Psalm 22 is not solely about suffering but also points to the redemption and victory that follow. The psalmist, despite his anguish, expresses trust in God’s deliverance and acknowledges His faithfulness. In the case of Jesus, his suffering on the cross was not the end but rather the means to bring about salvation for all who believe in him.

Psalm 22:14 serves as a prophetic foreshadowing of the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It reminds us of the immense price Jesus paid for our redemption and the depth of his love for humanity. It also encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in the midst of our own trials and sufferings, knowing that He is with us and will ultimately bring about victory and deliverance.

Overall, this verse, within the broader context of Psalm 22, invites us to reflect on the sacrificial love of Jesus and the hope we have in Him, even in the midst of our darkest moments.
