Psalms 119:31

I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O Lord, put me not to shame.

Psalms 119:31 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses divided into 22 sections that follow the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist speaks throughout about his deep love for God’s law, statutes, commandments, and testimonies. In the verses just before this one, he chooses the way of truth and sets God’s laws before him. This verse is a personal declaration of steadfast loyalty to God’s word, followed by a humble prayer for protection from shame.

The word “stuck” means to cling firmly, like something glued or attached so it cannot be pulled away. The psalmist says he has held tightly to God’s testimonies, which are God’s revealed truths, promises, and the doctrines contained in Scripture. This clinging is not a passive feeling but a deliberate, ongoing act of loyalty. He has believed these truths and professed them openly, even when others opposed him or cast reproach on him because of them.

The second half of the verse is a prayer: “O Lord, put me not to shame.” The psalmist asks that he would not be ashamed of the choice he has made, of the testimonies he adheres to, or of his hope and confidence in the Lord. He also asks that he would not be allowed to do anything sinful that would bring shame and contempt upon him. His plea is rooted in the desire that his public profession and trust in God’s word would be proven right, not disgraced. This prayer shows his humble dependence on God to sustain him.

This verse connects with the surrounding passage, where the psalmist sets God’s laws before him and asks for understanding to keep them. The immediate context shows a life oriented toward wholehearted obedience. The plea against shame also echoes the broader biblical promise that those who trust in the Lord will not be put to shame, because God vindicates those who rely on Him. The psalmist’s clinging is not passive but a deliberate, ongoing act of loyalty.

  • Commit to God’s word daily by reading, meditating, and letting it shape your thoughts and decisions, just as the psalmist clung to the testimonies.

  • Pray for God’s guidance and strength, recognizing your dependence on Him to keep you from stumbling and to empower you to walk in obedience.

  • Reflect God’s character in your life, so that your conduct brings honor to His name rather than shame.

  • Trust in God’s faithfulness when you face challenges or temptations, knowing that He will sustain you and prove your faith to be genuine.

True devotion to God’s word involves both a firm personal commitment and a humble dependence on God to preserve you from shame. The psalmist’s example encourages believers to hold fast to Scripture even in the face of opposition, and to pray for God’s sustaining grace so that their faith is not put to shame. This verse reminds us that our loyalty to God’s testimonies is not in vain, for the Lord honors those who cling to Him and His truth. He will not let them be disgraced.
