Psalms 119:47

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, consisting of 176 verses. It is a psalm that exalts the Word of God and expresses the psalmist’s love and devotion to it. Each section of this psalm is structured according to the Hebrew alphabet, with each verse in a section beginning with the corresponding letter.

Let’s focus on verse 47 specifically:

“I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.”

1. Delighting in God’s commandments: The psalmist expresses his delight and joy in the commandments of God. This indicates a deep appreciation for God’s law and a willingness to follow it. It reflects a heart that finds pleasure and satisfaction in obedience to God’s instructions.

2. The source of delight: The psalmist’s delight is rooted in his love for God’s commandments. Love for God’s Word is the foundation for finding joy in obeying it. When we truly love God’s commandments, they become a source of delight rather than a burden.

3. The importance of love: Love is a key motivator for obedience. The psalmist’s love for God’s commandments drives his delight in them. Similarly, Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Love for God and His Word should be the driving force behind our obedience.

4. The significance of God’s commandments: The psalmist acknowledges that God’s commandments are worthy of love and delight. They are not burdensome rules but divine instructions that lead to life and blessing. God’s commandments are given for our benefit, guiding us in the path of righteousness and protecting us from harm.

5. Application in our lives: As believers, we can apply this verse by cultivating a genuine love for God’s Word. When we love His commandments, they become a delight to us. We find joy in studying and meditating on Scripture, and we strive to live in obedience to God’s instructions.

6. The role of the Holy Spirit: It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to love God’s commandments and find delight in them. As we yield to the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, He transforms our hearts and aligns our desires with God’s will.
