Psalms 119:87

“They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.”

1. Context of Psalm 119:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the greatness and significance of God’s Word, His commandments, and His statutes. It consists of 176 verses, divided into 22 sections, with each section corresponding to a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

2. Understanding the verse:

a. “They had almost consumed me upon earth”: The psalmist expresses a sense of danger, opposition, or affliction. It could refer to enemies, difficulties, trials, or any adverse circumstances that threatened the psalmist’s well-being or faith.

b. “But I forsook not thy precepts”: Despite the challenges faced by the psalmist, they remained steadfast and did not abandon God’s precepts or commandments. The psalmist emphasizes their unwavering commitment to following God’s Word, even in the midst of adversity.

3. Lessons and applications:

a. Perseverance in the face of opposition: The psalmist’s resolve to not forsake God’s precepts serves as a powerful example of perseverance in the face of trials. It reminds us that difficulties and challenges should not deter us from following God’s Word.

b. The power of God’s Word: Throughout Psalm 119, the psalmist repeatedly extols the virtues and benefits of God’s Word. This verse highlights the psalmist’s recognition that God’s precepts provide guidance, strength, and stability, enabling them to overcome potential destruction or harm.

c. Trusting in God’s faithfulness: The psalmist’s unwavering commitment to God’s precepts demonstrates their trust in God’s faithfulness. Despite the threatening circumstances, they relied on God’s Word, finding comfort and assurance in its promises.

d. Encouragement for the reader: This verse can be an encouragement to believers today. It reminds us that even in the face of overwhelming challenges, we can remain faithful to God’s Word and draw strength from it. By trusting in God’s faithfulness, we can persevere and overcome.
