Psalms 119:98

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.”

Psalm 119:98 (KJV) says:

This verse is part of Psalm 119, which is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms and is known for its focus on the Word of God and its value in the life of a believer. Psalm 119 is an acrostic psalm, meaning that each section of eight verses begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, highlighting the comprehensive nature of God’s law.

In this particular verse, the psalmist acknowledges that by following and obeying God’s commandments, they have gained wisdom that surpasses that of their enemies. Let’s explore a few key points from this verse:

The Source of Wisdom:The psalmist recognizes that true wisdom comes from God’s commandments. By diligently studying and obeying the instructions and principles found in the Word of God, they have acquired wisdom that enables them to navigate life’s challenges.

Wisdom in the Face of Enemies:The psalmist acknowledges the presence of enemies who are constantly around them. However, by walking in obedience to God’s commandments, they have gained wisdom that surpasses their adversaries. This wisdom provides discernment, guidance, and protection against the schemes and attacks of their enemies.

God’s Presence:The phrase "for they are ever with me" indicates that God’s commandments are continually in the psalmist’s mind and heart. They recognize the abiding presence of God’s Word, which serves as a constant source of wisdom, encouragement, and guidance in their life.

This verse emphasizes the transformative power of God’s commandments when they are embraced and followed wholeheartedly. It reminds believers of the importance of seeking wisdom from God’s Word and the benefits it brings, especially in times of adversity or when facing opposition.

As we reflect on Psalm 119:98, we are encouraged to prioritise the study and application of God’s commandments in our lives. By doing so, we can experience the transformative power of wisdom that surpasses the understanding of our enemies, and we can find strength and guidance in God’s Word in all circumstances.
