Psalms 119:97

O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

Psalms 119:97 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses. It is a poetic acrostic, divided into 22 sections, each matching a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Verse 97 belongs to the section for MEM, the thirteenth letter. The whole psalm celebrates the value of God’s Word and the joy of living by it.

The word “law” translates the Hebrew term torah, meaning God’s instructions, commandments, and teachings. It includes moral, ethical, and spiritual guidance for His people. The psalmist’s love for this law is not cold respect but deep affection, because the law reveals God’s own character.

Meditation here means deliberate, focused reflection on Scripture. It is not a passing thought but a sustained practice that shapes the heart and mind. The psalmist says this meditation continues “all the day,” showing that love for God’s Word naturally leads to constant engagement with it.

This verse connects with Joshua 1:8, where God commands Joshua to meditate on the book of the law day and night. Both passages teach that ongoing reflection on Scripture brings obedience and success in God’s eyes. The psalmist’s example fulfills that same pattern of devotion.

This verse challenges believers to examine their own attitude toward God’s Word. Do we truly love His law? Are we intentional about thinking on it through the day? Regular study, reflection, and application help us grow in wisdom, discernment, and obedience.

Meditation transforms us from within. As we dwell on Scripture, we understand God’s will more clearly and align our lives with His purposes. This daily practice deepens our relationship with Him and guides our decisions.

Love for God’s Word and meditation on it belong together. One fuels the other. When affection for Scripture grows, reflection becomes a joy rather than a duty. The psalmist’s words invite us to make God’s law the steady focus of our hearts, so that His truth shapes every part of our day.
