Psalms 119:102

I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

Psalms 119:102 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses arranged in 22 sections that follow the Hebrew alphabet. This verse belongs to the section marked by the Hebrew letter Nun, which includes verses 97–104. The psalm as a whole celebrates the Word of God and the psalmist’s devotion to it.

The verse has two parts. First, “I have not departed from thy judgments” is a declaration of steadfast commitment. God’s judgments are His precepts, instructions, commandments, and laws that guide His people in righteous living, including His ways, worship, and ordinances. The psalmist affirms that he has not turned aside from them, but has remained faithful to God’s ways.

Second, “for thou hast taught me” gives the reason for that faithfulness. The psalmist does not credit his own effort; he acknowledges that God Himself has been his teacher. Divine instruction has enlightened and guided him, enabling him to hold fast to God’s judgments. His obedience is a response to God’s gracious work in his life.

This verse connects the believer’s perseverance with God’s active role as instructor. The psalmist’s confidence rests on what God has taught him, which is the foundation for his unwavering adherence to God’s doctrines.

The psalmist’s dedication challenges believers to examine their own devotion to God’s judgments. It urges a priority on living in alignment with Scripture rather than compromising faith. Recognizing God as the source of wisdom prompts believers to seek His instruction through prayer, diligent study of the Scriptures, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him.

Reflective questions: How committed am I to following God’s judgments in my daily life? Do I prioritize obedience to His Word? In what ways has God taught and guided me on my faith journey? How can I seek His instruction more intentionally? What practical steps can I take to deepen my understanding of God’s Word and apply it consistently in my everyday decisions?

True adherence to God’s ways is a result of being taught by God. As the psalmist learned the nature and use of God’s judgments from Him, believers today can trust that God continues to instruct those who seek Him, enabling them to remain faithful.
