Psalms 120:4

Sharpe arrowes of the mightie: with coales of iuniper. Psalms 120:4 (KJV)

The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers attributed to various authors, including King David. Psalm 120 is the first of fifteen psalms known as the “Songs of Ascents” or “Pilgrim Psalms,” likely sung by the Israelites as they journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feasts.

The verse employs vivid, figurative language, speaking of “sharp arrows of the mighty” and “coals of juniper.” Such imagery is common in the Psalms, intended to evoke strong emotions and paint a clear picture for the reader.

In biblical literature, arrows often symbolize God’s judgment or affliction, portrayed as weapons of the mighty that can bring destruction or punishment. Juniper trees in the ancient Near East produced hot‑burning coals used for cooking and heating, and they could also represent judgment and purification. The reference to coals of juniper therefore suggests an intense, burning judgment.

The passage can be understood in several ways. First, the Psalmist may be describing personal experience of being attacked or oppressed by powerful enemies, using the sharp arrows and burning coals to convey the severity of the assault. Second, the verse can be seen as a plea for God’s intervention and deliverance, acknowledging the power of adversaries while looking to God for protection and justice. Third, it serves as a reminder that God is a righteous judge who will hold the wicked accountable, affirming that those who act unjustly will face the consequences of their actions.

For believers today, the verse speaks to the various forms of opposition we may encounter—personal struggles, external circumstances, or spiritual battles. Psalm 120:4 encourages us to turn to God in these challenges, trusting that He is our refuge and source of strength. We can be confident that God is aware of our circumstances and is capable of bringing justice and deliverance.
