Psalms 135:6

Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.

Psalms 135:6 (KJV)

Psalm 135 is a song of praise that calls Israel to honor God for His greatness. The psalmist contrasts the living Lord with powerless idols, then declares that God does whatever pleases Him. This verse stands at the center of that praise, affirming that God’s will is never frustrated.

The verse names four realms: heaven, earth, the seas, and all deep places. Together they cover the whole universe, from the highest heights to the lowest depths. Nothing lies outside God’s reach. The phrase “whatsoever the Lord pleased” shows that God acts freely, according to His own wisdom and desire, not because He is forced or limited by anyone.

God’s power is complete. He does not merely know about events; He accomplishes what He purposes. His actions are never random or evil, because His character is holy and good. This is true sovereignty, and it belongs to God alone. No human ruler can do everything they please, but the Lord can and does.

This truth echoes Daniel 4:35, where God acts according to His will among the armies of heaven and the inhabitants of earth. Both verses teach that God’s rule is absolute and that no one can resist His hand. The same sovereignty appears in Ephesians 1:11, which speaks of God working all things after the counsel of His own will. These passages together show that God’s pleasure is the final cause of all that happens.

Because God is sovereign, believers can trust Him in every situation. When life feels chaotic, this verse reminds us that God is still in control. His purposes will stand, even when we cannot see how. This should lead us to prayer, asking God to align our desires with His, and to rest, knowing that nothing can defeat His plan.

God’s sovereignty is not a cold doctrine; it is a comfort. The same God who rules the seas and the deep places also cares for His people. We can praise Him with confidence, because His power and His goodness are always joined together.
