Psalms 135:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:12
Listen to this article

“He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.”

1. Understanding the context: Psalm 135 is a song of praise that focuses on the greatness and sovereignty of God. It begins by exhorting the people to praise the Lord and describes His supremacy over all other gods. Verse 7 specifically highlights some of God’s marvelous works in nature.

“He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth” refers to God’s control over the water cycle and atmospheric phenomena. God causes evaporation to occur, lifting up vapors from the earth’s surface into the atmosphere. This process is essential for the formation of clouds and the subsequent precipitation of rain.

“He maketh lightnings for the rain” acknowledges that God brings forth lightning as a precursor to rainfall. Lightning often accompanies storms and heavy showers. It serves as a visual reminder of God’s power and is a natural occurrence in the process of rain formation.

“He bringeth the wind out of his treasuries” acknowledges that God controls the winds. Wind is a significant meteorological phenomenon, and its direction and intensity have a profound impact on weather patterns. The metaphor of “treasuries” suggests that God stores and releases the winds according to His divine purposes.

2. “He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth”:

3. “He maketh lightnings for the rain”:

4. “He bringeth the wind out of his treasuries”:

5. Application and reflection:

  • a. God’s sovereignty: Psalm 135:7 reminds us of God’s complete control over nature. It demonstrates His power to manipulate atmospheric conditions, bringing about rain, lightning, and wind. Reflect on the majesty of God’s creation and the fact that He governs every aspect of it.
  • b. Gratitude for provision: As we witness rain, lightning, and wind, we can be grateful for God’s provision. Rain provides sustenance for crops and all living things. It is a reminder of God’s faithfulness in providing for our physical needs. Offer thanks to God for His abundant provision.
  • c. Trust in God’s power: The imagery in this verse reminds us of God’s power and might. Just as God controls the elements of nature, we can trust that He is also in control of the circumstances in our lives. Place your trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He is capable of bringing about the changes and outcomes needed.
  • d. Praise and worship: Like the psalmist, we can respond to God’s greatness with praise and worship. Meditate on His marvelous works and offer songs of adoration for His power and provision. Allow the awe-inspiring nature of God’s creation to draw you into deeper worship of Him.
