Psalms 140:12

Listen to this article

“I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.”

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers that express a range of emotions and experiences. Psalm 140 is attributed to David and is a prayer for deliverance from enemies and the preservation of the righteous.

Trust in God’s justice:This verse reflects the psalmist’s confidence in God’s character and his trust in His justice. Despite being afflicted and poor, the psalmist firmly believes that the Lord will intervene on their behalf. It acknowledges God as the ultimate defender and protector of the vulnerable.

God’s concern for the afflicted:Throughout the Bible, God consistently demonstrates His concern for the afflicted, marginalized, and oppressed. He is not indifferent to the struggles of His people. This verse assures the reader that God is aware of their situation and will act to maintain their cause.

The right of the poor:The psalmist acknowledges that the poor have rights that need to be upheld. In a society where the wealthy and powerful often oppress and exploit the less fortunate, this verse reminds us that God stands on the side of justice. He ensures that the rights of the poor and oppressed are not trampled upon.

God’s justice and intervention:This verse expresses a broader theological truth about God’s character. It highlights His role as a just judge who intervenes to protect and defend His people. Even when it may seem that the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer, God’s justice will ultimately prevail.

Application:As believers, we can find comfort and encouragement in this verse. It reminds us to trust in God’s justice, even when we face adversity or witness injustice around us. We can bring our concerns and struggles before God, knowing that He hears us and will maintain our cause. It also calls us to be advocates for the poor and oppressed, reflecting God’s heart for justice in our own lives and communities.

  • Overall:Psalm 140:12 (KJV) reassures us of God’s active involvement in the lives of the afflicted and His commitment to upholding the rights of the poor. It invites us to trust in His justice and prompts us to pursue justice and mercy in our interactions with others.
