Psalms 140:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:11
Listen to this article

“Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.”

In this verse, the psalmist expresses a plea to God for protection against evil and violence.

Let’s explore the verse in more detail:

Context:

This verse begins with a request to God, asking Him to prevent the establishment or success of an evil speaker. An “evil speaker” refers to someone who utters harmful words, engages in slander or false accusations, or speaks wickedness. The psalmist desires that such individuals do not gain influence or authority in the world.

  • This verse highlights the importance of guarding against the negative impact of harmful speech. It serves as a reminder for believers to be mindful of their own words and to avoid participating in or supporting slanderous or deceitful speech.

Consequences:

Here, the psalmist describes the consequences that await the violent person. The term “violent man” refers to someone who engages in acts of aggression, oppression, or injustice.

  • The verse states that evil will “hunt” the violent person. This suggests that the negative consequences of their actions will eventually catch up to them. It implies that their own wrongdoing will bring about their downfall.
  • This verse reflects a principle found throughout Scripture, where God’s justice prevails and evildoers face the consequences of their actions. It reminds believers that God is ultimately in control and will bring about justice in due time.

Overall, Psalm 140:11 serves as a prayer for protection against those who use their words to bring harm and a reminder that God’s justice will ultimately prevail against the violent and unjust. It encourages believers to be mindful of their own speech and to trust in God’s righteous judgment.
